Narrated by a werewolf daughter, the story opens with a family trip organized at the request of her mother, Lucia Sweeney, the pack's chief healer. While avoiding known danger zones, the narrator and her sister Linda Harper are ambushed by rogues. The narrator throws herself into the path of silver claws to protect Linda, gets driven into a silver mine, and suffers catastrophic injuries: her back is slashed to the bone and silver shards embed deep in her right leg. Silver poison races toward her heart and her wolf whimpers near death. Despite her pleas, Lucia directs every healer to examine Linda's minor scrapes, accusing the dying daughter of heartlessness. The narrator hears her wolf's final whimper and falls asleep in the cold wind, never waking again.
