Anya, overwhelmed by severe social anxiety, deliberately infects herself when the apocalypse begins, hoping to avoid both survival pressure and human interaction. Instead of turning mindless, she awakens as a rare conscious zombie with no combat ability. She straps on a backpack and heads south toward the family she left behind. Her innate compassion repeatedly pulls endangered survivors from danger despite her helplessness. On the road she encounters Zane, a ruthless human operative; Leon, a fellow zombie possessing overwhelming fighting strength; and Mia, a deranged virologist. She also adopts an extraordinarily adorable zombie dog. Together the four form an unconventional wasteland team searching for her family and the virus's origin.
