Hours after delivering a daughter, the protagonist watches her husband of five years arrive at the hospital with his late brother's widow and a toddler. Her mother-in-law declares the baby girl worthless, while the husband insists on a second marriage to continue the Carter lineage and attempts to suffocate the newborn. Despair shifts when the infant projects angry, articulate thoughts exposing the husband's long affair, the widow's deception about the boy's paternity, and the child's own identity as a reincarnated angel of fortune. Empowered, the mother files for divorce. During a violent confrontation where the ex-husband lifts the baby to smash her, a military convoy breaches the facility. The U.S. President and the Grand Oracle kneel before the infant, addressing her as the nation's Angel. The former in-laws realize they have discarded a divine protector, and the protagonist begins systematic retaliation from the White House.
