Catherine maintains a modest household with Ethan and their son Leo, who depends on the Sacred Scale Elixir to survive the Dragon's Blood Curse. After accumulating five hundred gold coins for the treatment, she uncovers Ethan's true identity as the Crown Prince of Anjou, a rank he concealed for seven years to test her character. He had redirected the medical funds to purchase a bracelet for his mistress Victoria, causing Leo's death before the elixir arrived. The boy's posthumous manuscript Nightmare reveals he knew the truth. Catherine then learns their marriage license was forged, rendering the union invalid. She joins the Florentine Merchants' Guild and rises to chief consultant through alchemical skill, while Ethan punishes Victoria for delaying the cure, breaks with his father over bloodline supremacy, abolishes the discriminatory ban, and honors Leo posthumously.
