On Christmas Eve, Helena is hospitalized for malnutrition while her parents decline the $1,500 charge. At the same time, they purchase $2,900 concert tickets and provide a monthly allowance exceeding $10,000 for her younger sister. The disparity forces Helena to recognize that their neglect is intentional, not financial. She ends the family arrangement and moves in with the Cooper couple, whose support helps her enter graduate school and build a career. Years later, the sister descends into crime and murders their parents. When the broken parents seek forgiveness, Helena refuses, having learned that family is defined by love rather than blood.
