Luke abandons photography to support Audrey's surgical career for five years, even undergoing a vasectomy at her request. She repays his devotion with indifference, prioritizing her coworker Ryan over Luke's critically ill father, who dies after she refuses to operate. The final break comes on their anniversary when Audrey forgets the occasion to rush to Ryan's aunt. Luke slips divorce papers into a stack she signs blindly. During his vasectomy reversal, Ryan serves as nurse and Luke suffers severe bleeding; Audrey still defends Ryan. Luke sells her gifts, leaves signed documents, and disappears. Ryan is later exposed for misconduct, costing Audrey her license. She tracks Luke to Silver Peak Highway begging reconciliation, but he refuses. Luke eventually marries Melanie, resumes photography, and achieves international fame while Audrey remains alone, barred from surgery.
