Engineer Kit Vane retrieves the malfunctioning unit PWL-000 from disposal, motivated by technical curiosity rather than empathy. The machine carries a reject classification, flawed by every diagnostic standard, yet Kit rebuilds it despite the irrationality. Their interaction begins as structured observation, but the robot's coded devotion gradually mutates into behavior indistinguishable from yearning. Kit, who navigates circuitry more fluently than human connection, discovers herself reciprocally understood in ways she never expected. A concealed truth embedded in the unit's history predates their meeting, a profound attachment sealed away long ago that, once revealed, recontextualizes every prior moment between them.
