In early 1900s Yorkshire, barrister Cassian Black faces a murder conviction that threatens his family estate. His mother arranges for widow Ella Thorne to conceive an heir with him in prison, but Cassian injures himself to avoid involving her. His integrity prompts Ella to honor their agreement voluntarily. Upon release, he shields her bakery, her ailing mother-in-law, and her twin children from aristocratic hostility, kidnapping attempts, and a forced marriage plot. Ella recognizes the depth of her feelings only after Cassian is brutally beaten and abandoned on the moor. She risks everything to rescue him, and together they defeat the conspiracy led by Sir Ashcroft, transcend rigid class divisions, and build a shared life.
