When the narrator discovers her husband Leonardo Marchetti remains devoted to his first love Valentina, she begins coaching their daughter Sofia to address him as Uncle Leonardo. The linguistic shift sharpens each time Leonardo abandons Sofia — leaving a sprained ankle untreated to comfort Valentina's daughter Lily after a nightmare, skipping Sofia's sports day for Lily's three-legged race, and finally departing a promised piano recital when Valentina calls again. At the recital, Sofia voices the new reality from the stage, telling Leonardo to tend to his other child while her mother remains.
