Audrey Finch believes Lucas Montero died years ago, so she submits to being his mistress to pay for her sister Ruby's medical bills while stomach cancer consumes her. In truth, Lucas faked his death and orchestrated the ruin of Audrey's family alongside Cassandra Thorne. He maintains control by threatening Ruby's safety and desecrating her parents' graves. The arrangement collapses when Cassandra destroys the family burial site and reveals Ruby is already dead. Audrey retaliates violently, leading Lucas to dump her in an underground boxing ring where she collapses. Assuming she is protesting, he orders her cremation if she perishes. Confronted with proof of her death, Lucas breaks down, executes Cassandra, and publicly claims Audrey as his wife. Meanwhile, European mafia leader Cyrus Wolff has secretly rescued Audrey to Switzerland, where her cancer stabilizes. She wakes with amnesia; Cyrus poses as her fiancé, repaying a life debt from years prior. His sister Daisy and a news report on Lucas eventually restore her memories. Audrey returns to Chicago, stabs Lucas at her family's graves, and rejects his marriage proposal. Confined to his estate, she gathers evidence with Cyrus to bring police to his door. Released on bail, Lucas commits suicide at her parents' graves, leaving her his fortune and a farewell message. Audrey chooses to return to Europe and resume her interrupted recovery.
