Eileen volunteers to mate Kael, the Black Pack heir and her childhood companion, hoping the bond will end generations of slaughter between Moonshadow and Black Pack. She has loved him for a decade. After the ceremony he keeps her close for three days, then vanishes. Years later he leads Black Pack warriors into Moonshadow territory, killing her father, mother, and brother, and reveals he believes her parents ordered the murder of his own parents. The true killer, a woman named Selena, later becomes Kael's Luna when he rules both packs. He locks Eileen in an abandoned dungeon to repay a blood debt that never belonged to her family, and whenever she attempts suicide he forces his men to desecrate a relative's grave. Ten years earlier she swallowed a nest of blood worms to save his life; the parasites have now reached her heart, giving her three days to live.
