UCLA student Emily brushes off roommate Freya's tarot alert about the gate of the dead on the night before classes begin. She soon dreams of a handsome man named Jack, obtains his number, and enters an intense nightly messaging romance. With each exchange Emily grows sicker and weaker while Jack refuses full video, his voice masked by static. A group call captures only half his face before the recording dissolves into screams. Freya uncovers a news report stating Jack died in a basement fire months earlier, his final text reading "Call me tonight." His profile photo then shifts to show his burned remains, and he messages Emily that he stands at her door as scratching sounds echo outside.
