Before turning five, the narrator lived as a cherished only child in a luxurious home, with parents who documented every smile in photo albums and once braved a storm to fetch birthday cake. The dynamic shattered after a younger sister arrived. When the narrator lowered the air conditioner by a single degree to comfort the infant, her mother responded by striking her and locking her inside a refrigerator with the words that she would stay until learning a lesson. The child remained trapped for hours, unable to turn the handle, until a neighbor forced the door open. Her parents, believing she had died, collapsed in tears and begged for forgiveness upon her return.
