Thea, a Ph.D. candidate, teaches a solitary male dragon courtship calls and the Flame Dance for her thesis. He masters the ritual at once and performs it before her. Her mentor then reveals that the ceremony forces the performer to seize the chosen mate, carry her to a nest, and confine her until eggs are laid. As claws rip open the roof, the dragon shifts into human form to take her. A fever dream sends Thea back twelve years to the moment a cable car drop ended with a young ancient dragon rescuing her.
