Olivia Bennett accepts a murder conviction for her husband Ethan Parker, then disappears into Cancún when her passport is stolen, severing all contact with their infant son Leo. After five years of hardship she returns to San Francisco and discovers Leo calling Ethan's former fiancée Claire "Mom," while Ethan compels the physically weakened Olivia to undergo repeated blood transfusions to sustain Claire's failing health. Olivia realizes the original charge, her exile, and the missing passport were a coordinated deception. Her attempts to secure Mexican immigration documents are thwarted by betrayal, public vilification, and pursuit by Claire. A consulate rescue extracts the gravely injured Olivia, who formally ends the marriage and returns to the Palm Bay Hotel she founded in Cancún. Ethan later learns the extent of her suffering and witnesses Claire harming Leo, prompting remorse and a failed reconciliation attempt in Cancún.
