Veteran defense attorney Alexander Hale has spent decades winning acquittals for elite clients while secretly channeling every fee into a foundation that has provided legal aid to over three thousand indigent people. Twenty years earlier, he survived a gangster vendetta after freeing an innocent man and later raised his daughter Clara alone after his wife's death. When Victor Blackwood, heir to a billionaire dynasty, inflicts brutal torture on Clara and her husband Daniel, Hale abandons his defense practice to prosecute the case himself, facing his former protégé Ethan Reynolds in court. As Charles Blackwood and Ethan manufacture charges that trigger an FBI investigation, ninety-nine attorneys volunteer to represent Hale pro bono.
