In the Dark Moon Pack, wrist marks signal honesty with green light and deceit with red, yet Selena's mark flares crimson whenever fear accelerates her pulse, even when she speaks truthfully. Her twin Maya destroys their mother Elena's ceremonial dress and blames the pack hounds, but Maya's mark remains serene green. Elena refuses to touch Selena, insisting the Goddess's judgment is absolute and that Selena's own heart betrays her. Years of rejection lead Selena to internalize the belief that she is fundamentally broken, culminating in a final written plea for her mother to believe her just once before she dies.
