Erin moves into a new house and finds bedrooms assigned to her parents, brother Ryan, and adopted sister Sophie — but not to her. For a decade, mother Helen has enforced a life debt owed to Sophie because Sophie's father Thomas supposedly drowned saving Ryan. Erin surrendered her room, parental attention, and boyfriend Ethan to Sophie's priority. The breaking point arrives when Erin discovers a group chat named "Sophie's Family" containing every relative and Ethan except herself. Ryan tells her to leave if she will not repay the debt, so Erin quietly departs for a five-year aviation meteorology program in New Mexico. Later the truth emerges: Thomas never saved Ryan. The family realizes they exiled their own daughter for a fabricated obligation.
