Chicago fertility doctor Vera Goldstein discovers her clinic director Daniel secretly sold over three hundred patients' frozen eggs to biotech firm New Era Genetics. After reporting the theft costs her career, Vera takes a janitorial position inside the company to steal proof of forged consent forms and unauthorized gene-editing research. She organizes the victims into a group called Egg Guardians and launches a class-action suit that convicts Daniel and the CEO. The investigation then uncovers Project Phoenix, an international network creating genetically modified children from smuggled eggs. With assistance from lab whistleblower Clara, her attorney daughter Lily, and a teenager named Emma who is a product of the program, Vera tracks hundreds of altered children worldwide, establishes a free medical network for them, and advocates for global genetic regulation while running a permanent fertility rights hotline.
