Alpha Kaelen arrives before the Marking Rite with his pregnant childhood friend Roslyn. He warns that the Wolf Council will banish Roslyn if her pregnancy out of wedlock is discovered. He demands that his intended mate renounce the ceremony and write a letter confessing to breaking their mating vows. In exchange, he places the one-of-a-kind Luna Crown in her hands and swears he will sever the bond with Roslyn once she and her pup are secure, insisting she remains his fated mate. She recalls five years of devotion, including taking a poison-laced blade for him and purging traitors from the pack. She agrees, then sends a message that she will return home to her father in three days, revealing she is the only daughter of the Lycan king.
