At an orphanage the narrator perceives soul colors that reveal moral nature: red signals goodness and black signals evil. Two prospective adoptive couples arrive, one wealthy and one poor. The rich pair radiates pitch‑black souls while the poorer couple glows warm red despite having a son who cannot walk. Best friend Mia insists on joining the affluent family, dismissing the narrator’s warning and physically shoving them aside. The narrator remains and accepts the humble household whose kindness outshines their material lack.
