The narrator awakens on the night her former best friend loses a baby during a debauched party with the husband's uncle, a do-over after a previous life ended in ruin. In that first timeline, the friend stole the narrator's boyfriend, a Chicago Outfit underboss, then fabricated embezzlement and a male-escort scandal to mask her own theft. She blamed the narrator for the miscarriage, claiming a staged intervention turned violent, and convinced the underboss to ship her to a Mexican cartel stronghold. There, the friend's lover sold her into a red-light district where addiction and exploitation killed her. Now returned to the pivotal evening, the narrator holds foreknowledge of the frame-up and the cartel pipeline waiting in the shadows.
