Stella grows up forced to wear a collar that flashes red and shocks her whenever her mother decides she is lying. Her twin sister wears an identical band that stays green, granting automatic credibility and comfort. Stella endures repeated jolts while insisting she tells the truth, but the device's verdict silences her. When a genuine medical emergency strikes, the necklace still signals deception, so her mother dismisses the crisis. The collar actually detects fear and pain, not falsehoods, and Stella dies from the untreated condition. Her mother's faith in the pseudoscientific gadget destroys the family.
