After her mother dies, Clara is brought to Ashford Estate where her father ignores her, stepmother Isabella forges papers to steal her champion Thoroughbred and Olympic berth, and stepsister Harper forces her into servitude. Clara feigns meekness to draw Julian Sterling, Harper's loyal backer, into her confidence by revealing their parallel abusive childhoods, flipping his allegiance. Her composure then wins over Julian's brother Ethan and family chairman Richard, making the powerful Sterling clan her protectors. At a national equestrian competition, Harper fails publicly and frames Clara for sabotage; Clara exposes the lie, rides the difficult horse to victory, and later presents an official Olympic qualification letter at an association dinner, humiliating the Ashfords. The Sterlings sever ties with Harper, and federal agents arrest Isabella and Harper for fraud and forgery.
