Queen Elara of Valeron bears a black dragon egg until King Selon's mistress Seraphina fabricates proof of adultery. The king smashes the visible egg, shatters Elara's horns, strips her rank, and condemns her to slavery. Elara secretly preserves the offspring by casting it into a volcanic vent. Dragon King Milos of Aurens retrieves the hatchling, naming him Kael, and raises him far from court intrigue. Though Kael matures without any draconic gifts, he masters arcane arts to become the realm's supreme mage, awakening the Primordial Dragon's might at age twenty. He returns to Valeron, locating and freeing his enslaved mother from the clutches of Seraphina's son Caden. When Frost Dragons invade, Caden flees and shifts blame onto Elara. Kael unleashes his awakened power to defeat the invaders and reunite with his mother, later ascending the throne. An ancient dark mage named Morg, sealed for three centuries, possesses Caden, incites war among the races, and frames Kael. Kael dismantles Morg's schemes and ultimately unites the continent.
