Marine biologist Dr. Ella Novak arrives at a marine park ordered to sign off on euthanasia for Moon Shadow, an orca held alone since the 1980s. A prolonged, silent gaze from the animal halts her compliance. Park founder Kyle Sterling, driven by his late daughter's insistence that the whale recognized her, recruits Ella to attempt a return to the Alaskan capture site. They pilot the research vessel Moon Shadow northward, stalling the craft so the orca can navigate canyons and open water using memory, currents, and sunlight. Legal pressure from Ellis Hammond shadows the voyage. Ella confronts guilt from a failed stranding rescue at age twelve, while Kyle honors his daughter's conviction. The journey ends when Moon Shadow joins a wild pod, no longer the solitary captive.
