Brenda spends five years dating Grady while his family, the Cabreras, subjects her to annual tarot ceremonies that always produce an unlucky card, branding her unworthy in front of everyone. In the fifth year the clan finally consents to the engagement, but on the party day Brenda uncovers proof that Grady and the tarot reader, Mallory, have been colluding with rigged decks to undermine the relationship. She boards a flight for a high-paying job in New York, and at the celebration her best friend Eden screens video evidence of the manipulation.
