Born one minute after her twin Elena, the narrator grows up in an elf clan where a witch's curse dooms the firstborn to die at eighteen. Their parents lavish every resource on Elena while treating the younger twin as an obligation, dismissing her needs and pain. On Elena's eighteenth birthday, when the curse should activate, the narrator suffers severe abdominal cramps and begs for help. Her parents lock her in a damp cellar to focus entirely on Elena, ignoring her pleas until she dies alone on the stone floor, her last thought questioning whether they would have comforted her if their roles were reversed.
