A shifter mother watches helplessly as her niece Raven Blackwood and friends throw her sleeping pup from a longhouse window, killing him instantly. Pack law shields the minor from real punishment, leaving only angry rebukes from her mate Damien Blackwood and Luna Margaret Bailey. The mother dies of grief that winter and awakens on the day of the Moon Gathering. She immediately sends her son to her birth pack for protection before confronting the Luna's courtyard again. This time a swaddled infant crashes onto the frozen stones beside her, and Raven smirks from above, declaring a mongrel dead.
