After years away, the protagonist rejoins the Costello household as the biological daughter but is treated as an intruder. Her parents and brother favor Brittany, the sister they raised, providing her with luxury while the protagonist receives leftovers and a closet. When the government launches a mandatory Fairness System designed to enforce absolute equality, the family registers immediately, believing it will secure Brittany's comfort. Instead, the system strips away the advantages they built around the adopted daughter, exposing the hypocrisy of their appeals to justice and leaving the Costellos to confront the consequences of their own design.
