Evelyn spends twenty-one years as a Ford daughter until the return of Cecilia, the biological child, pushes her to the margins. An earthquake exposes the hierarchy when her brother Liam and fiancé Sebastian prioritize Cecilia's safety over Evelyn's shattered leg. Sebastian soon intends to break their engagement, but Evelyn ends it first. Her adoptive mother then forces a date with a womanizer and strikes her, while Liam admits he would choose Cecilia again. On their shared birthday, the family celebrates Cecilia in secret as Evelyn departs for Miami alone. Five years later, Evelyn has been groomed to lead her maternal aunt's company while the Fords face business collapse, Sebastian and Cecilia have split, and Cecilia is imprisoned for a fatal street-racing crash.
