The narrator watches two childhood friends, Jessica Miller and Megan Flores, abandon prestigious university plans to follow Ethan Blake, the poorest student in their class, to a dismal community college after he scores only 660 on the SAT. Despite repeated warnings and a last-minute intervention with their parents that redirects the girls to a better school, Ethan enrolls alone. Months later, he dies by jumping from a campus building. Convinced the narrator's interference isolated Ethan and drove him to suicide, Jessica and Megan lure her to a rooftop and shove her off. She awakens at the exact moment the friends originally chose to follow Ethan, now resolved to stay silent and let them face the consequences alone.
