Thirteen-year-old Elara Thorne's blood failed to activate the Moonstone Altar because pack healer Sable Vance had coated it with wolfsbane. Alpha Alaric's illegitimate daughter Sera was declared the true Luna instead. That night Elara's mother Selene discovered the residue and fell to her death from North Cliff. Six months later eleven-year-old Sera burned the granary, destroying Elara's throat and stealing her ability to howl, which traps her indoors every full moon. Selene's willed North Ridge hunting grounds were left to "Selene's daughter," but the pack records now deny Elara exists; Alaric has administered the estate for twelve years while proceeds flow into Sable's accounts. Three years ago Kade Ashford, heir of the Ashford Pack, entered Crescent Hollow disguised as a guard to repay a childhood debt to the girl who saved him from a wildfire and gave him a moonstone pendant. He scented the cloak on Sera and marked her, but the bond remains incomplete. Elara recognizes the pendant on Kade's collar as her mother's — a gift she gave away at age five — and names him her personal guard. Meanwhile neighboring Alpha Rowan Blackwood feigns an inability to shift to avoid arranged marriages and publicly seeks "Selene Thorne's daughter" as his bride.
